Just watched a YT austral review where the car had the 20 inch 235/45/20 Michelin primacy tyres fitted.
Two things crossed my mind,

1/ Why are car wheels / tyres getting so big ? ....Anyone know.

2/ How much are these tyres.

Considering the reviewer wasn't particularly impressed with the Michelin's, I thought maybe they were a cheaper tyre version from this premium company, so I took a look...... My goodness me. 4 tyres are going to set you back, not far short of £900 pounds, and with the 4 wheel steering, maybe or maybe not speeding up the wear on the rear, you could well find yourself fitting 4 the same time.

Gone are the days when my old Vauxhall viva and it's 155/13 tyres would cost me £20.

Happy motoring,

I don't know about the 20inches, but my previous car was a Kadjar and the 19 inch tyres (Michelin) were €220 each ( in Ireland)...

Hello. I ask the same question - why? Only for looks???
I currently drive a Kadjar which has 19 inch wheels. Our Eastern European roads are far from perfect and the ride is very bumpy, to say the least. It is a relief when I "must" change to our 17" Good Year winter tyres. Such a smooth and nice ride.
We love the new Austral and had decided to order it, but keep hesitating because of the wheels. The trim we want only comes with 20" wheels. We could get less specs and go for the 19", but still much.
Any thoughts about this? How is the Austral driving on bad roads? And I don't mean gravel roads, just badly maintained roads.

I have an iconic esprit alpine and i find it very comfortable even on the bad roads up in Connemara.

The drive on our bumpy UK roads wearing the 20 inch Iconic model Michelin tyres are not to bad actually.
I am just your ordinary driver who has a wife with a dodgy back and was worried about some of the reviews I had been reading.
I compared them against our 2020 Qashqai tyres which were fatter and softer. They ride ok.
As for the price !!!!!!!!!
My goodness.

One I found is that the 20" Michelin seems to wear out faster than my 19" Michelin on my previous Kadjar. I used to get at least 35000 miles with one set of Primacy, I am not sure to get that with the 20" on the Austral..."Some say" it is because it is an hybrid as, like EV's it uses more rubber???

I've never been a fan of Michelin tyres and when the time comes to renew mine I will be looking for an alternative. There a many reputable branded 20" tyres out there as good as or better than Michelin for 30% less. Avon, Hankook, Good Year to name a few.

I juast had to replace the front Michelin Primacy tyres on my Austral (tyre wall ripped on a kerb). Availability of 235/45/R20 100V drove me to the Good Year All Season Gen 3, which are good so far. The GY have a W speed rating instead of the V on Primacy, but that's no issue as it's better. I also now get all season grip instead of just summer tyres. 200€ a tyre here in Spain, 60€ less than Michellin Primacy.

I don't think the tyres and wheels will take the punishment. I've got the R20, having been forced that way because I wanted top range model. I've just had to replace both fronts after ripping the tyre wall just trying to bounce up a kerb, and it also damaged the alloy as the tyre is no further out than the alloy, which it was on my Kadjar 19 inch wheels before. FYI, I replaced the tyres with Good Year 4 Season Gen 3 in a 235 45 R20 100 W spec. I think they will be much better, but still I will need to be careful. I'm in France & Spain were roads are generally good.
